Mohammed Fairuz Fauzy (born 24 October 1982 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) is a Malaysian former racing driver, who competed in the FIA GP2 Series in 2005, 2006 and 2011.[1] One of the highest rated Asian drivers in his youth, Fauzy would endure two pointless seasons of GP2 in his first attempt at the Series, before returning to the championship in 2011.[1]

Fauzy was signed by DAMS ahead of the inaugural GP2 Series season in 2005, with the Malaysian racer partnered by José María López.[2] The Malaysian would, however, endure a pointless season in the first GP2 season, with teammate López scoring all of DAMS' points for the season.[3]

DAMS dropped both Fauzy and López at the end of 2005, leading both to sign with Super Nova Racing for the 2006 season.[4] However, both would struggle in their sophomore season in GP2, with Fauzy again failing to claim a point as he again finished twenty-fourth in the championship.[5]

Fauzy left GP2 at the end of 2006, pursuing several attempts to break into Formula One as a full-time test and reserve driver, while also debuting in the inaugural 2008 GP2 Asia Series.[6] In 2011 the Malaysian racer would return to GP2 for a third full campaign, and would finally score points upon his return, although he would still only muster eighteenth in the final standings.[6]

After his second attempt at single-seaters, Fauzy would move into GT racing, competing in various series until ending his professional career at the end of 2017 in the Asian Le Mans Series.[6]

Background[]

Fauzy began his career in karting, before graduating to single seaters in 1999 when the Malaysian youth moved to the United Kingdom to compete in British Formula Ford.[6] In 2000 Fauzy moved over to the Formula Renault 2.0 UK series, finishing seventh with a single podium finish.[6] For 2002 the Malaysian youth moved across to the British Formula 3 Championship, entering the National Class.[6]

British F3: 2002 - 2004[]

Fauzy's maiden British F3 season saw him claiming ninth in the National Class, enough to earn him a graduation to the full British F3 Championship in 2003.[6] The Malaysian racer would claim a handful of points en-route to sixteenth, which would again secure Fauzy a seat in the championship for 2004.[6] Fauzy would again show improvement in his third campaign in British F3, claiming two podium finishes as he climbed to twelfth in the championship.[6]

GP2 Series History[]

Fauzy was signed by DAMS ahead of the inaugural 2005 FIA GP2 Series, who would partner the Malaysian youth with José María López for the campaign.[6]

Post GP2 Series Career[]

In 2005/06 Fauzy would compete in the A1 Grand Prix championship alongside Alex Yoong for Team Malaysia.[6] The Malaysian racer would go on to compete in A1 Grand Prix again in 2007/08 and 2008/09, claiming one win in the latter campaign.[6] In 2007 Fauzy secured his first role in Formula One, serving as a test driver for Spyker for the season.[6]

Asian Ambition: 2008 - 2017[]

For 2008 Fauzy would race in the GP2 Asia Series, claiming one win with Super Nova to claim fourth in the inaugural Series, before securing a seat in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series for 2009.[6] Finishing second overall, Fauzy again secured a test driver role in F1 with Lotus Racing, before their fallout with title sponsors Lotus Cars resulted in the Malaysian racer's contract being cancelled after one year.[6]

After spending 2011 back in GP2, with appearances in the Asia Series and FR 3.5, Fauzy would switch to GT racing in 2013, entering various one-off races including in the Super GT.[6] The Malaysian racer would then bounce between select GT races in Asia, before entering the Asian Le Mans Series in 2017.[6] However, after a difficult campaign Fauzy would finally call time on his professional career
