2007 2009

The 2008 FIA GP2 Series, otherwise known as the 2008 GP2 Season, was the fourth season of the FIA GP2 Series, staged between the 26 April and 14 September 2008, primarily in Europe.[1] The season would see former Formula One driver Giorgio Pantano secure the Championship, after fending off challenges from Bruno Senna, Lucas di Grassi and Romain Grosjean.

2007 had seen Timo Glock beat di Grassi to the title, with the German duly leaving the series to take a seat in F1.[2] iSport International, in contrast, would defend their Teams Championship crown, hiring Senna and promising Indian talent Karun Chandhok.[3]

Álvaro Parente opened the season with victory in Barcelona, beating pole sitter Pastor Maldonado in his first race.[4] Kamui Kobayashi subsequently claimed victory in Sprint, after Grosjean was given a drive-through for illegal blocking, while Pantano secured his first win of the season in the Istanbul Feature Race.[5]

Indeed, Pantano would go on to dominate the early part of the season, claiming four wins in the opening six Feature Races of the season. However, his Sprint form kept the rest of the field in the hunt, with Bruno Senna and Grosjean able to keep pace.

di Grassi entered the Championship hunt late in the season, having missed the first part of the campaign due to his work developing the new Dallara GP2/08.[6] Regardless, di Grassi would outscore many of his rivals in his second half charge, and was set to mount a title challenge ahead of the final two rounds.

Ultimately di Grassi and Grosjean were ruled out of the fight at the penultimate round, with di Grassi literally coming to blows with Giorgio Pantano in the Spa Sprint.[7] That left just Pantano and Senna in the title fight, with their duel for the crown settled at the final race as Senna failed to score.[8]

Background[]

Calendar[]

A ten round, twenty race, schedule was announced for the 2008 edition of the GP2 Series, with the main highlights being an expansion of the round in Monte Carlo to match a full GP2 weekend, and the addition of a stand-alone round at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo.[9] Released on 25 March 2008, the provisional calendar would see the season open in Spain on 26 - 27 April, with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya staging the opening round alongside hosting the Spanish Grand Prix.[9] The Series would then head to Istanbul Park on 10 - 11 May, followed two weeks later by the expanded round in Monte Carlo, which would run to reduced race distances as in previous seasons.[9]

The stand-alone round was listed for 31 May - 1 June at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain, before the series reunited with F1 to support the French Grand Prix at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours.[9] A set of races at Silverstone would follow on 5 - 6 July, which marked the halfway point of the season, with Hockenheim hosting the sixth round two weeks later.[9] GP2 would then head to the Hungaroring to support the Hungarian Grand Prix on 2 - 3 August, before completing the season with two rounds in two weeks, with battles at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 6 - 7 September and the Autodromo Nazionale Monza on 13 - 14 September.[9]

A Valencian Shuffle[]

Shortly before the start of the campaign there would be a revised calendar released, which saw one round removed and replaced with a new one on a later date, which effectively saw GP2 lose its summer break.[1] The round to missout would be the stand-alone event at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, which was removed in order to allow GP2 to support the European Grand Prix on 23 - 24 August, which would still be staged in Valencia, Spain, but at the Valencia Street Circuit rather than the purpose built venue near the city.[1] To compensate for the loss of track time, GP2 organised an additional in-season test to break-up the month long break between the rounds in Monaco and Magny-Cours, with the Circuit Paul Ricard booked out for the weekend of 31 May - 1 June instead.[1]

Season Report[]

Regulations[]

There were major changes to the rulebook for the 2008 FIA GP2 Series, with GP2 introducing a new car for the series, the Dallara GP2/08, although the series would keep the existing Mecachrome V8108 engine that had served the series since its inception in 2005.[47] Otherwise there was a fair amount of stability in the rulebook regarding the sporting regulations, with no changes to race lengths, tyre usage or points allocations from 2007.[48]

Technical[]

Sporting[]

There were no significant changes to the sporting rulebook for 2008, with Feature race distances remaining set at 180 km/75 minutes (150 km for Monte Carlo/Hungary) and Sprints remaining at 120 km/45 minutes (100 km for Monaco/Hungary).[48] The allocation of tyres from Bridgestone was also set in stone before each weekend, although only one compound would be used at each race meeting, with at least one tyre having to be changed during the mandatory pitstop in each Feature Race.[48]

Tyre Allocation[]

The race-by-race tyre allocation for the 2008 FIA GP2 Series is outlined below:

Championship Points[]

There was stability in the points allocation for the 2008 campaign, with the top eight in the Feature Race claiming points, and the top six in the Sprint Race awarded the chance to score.[48]
